Old dogs

Insurance for old/senior dogs

Illnesses and injuries to the old dog represent a high cost risk for the owners, which should by no means be underestimated. Dog health insurance offers protection in the event of an emergency and covers most of the veterinary costs that you incur due to the necessary treatments.

Since older animals often get sick and therefore high veterinary bills are possible, taking out dog health insurance for old dogs is particularly useful .

Key facts at a glance:

  • In the event of illness, dog owners must expect high veterinary bills.
  • Since older dogs get sick more often than average, they have an increased risk of costs.
  • Owners of old dogs can also protect themselves with dog health insurance.
  • For healthy animals, it is usually possible to take out dog health insurance regardless of age.
  • The insurance premium for old dogs is slightly higher than for their younger counterparts.

What dog health insurance offers for old dogs

When taking out your dog insurance, you have the choice between pure surgical insurance and full health insurance. Surgical insurance pays for medically necessary surgical procedures and subsequent hospital stays. It is particularly cheap. However, you have to pay for normal examinations yourself. If you choose full health insurance instead, you will also be insured against normal treatment costs. Such dog health insurance covers, among other things, medication and various examinations such as X-rays, operations or special diet food.

Is dog health insurance possible for old dogs?

In principle, it is possible to take out dog health insurance regardless of the age of your four-legged friend. However, if you have an old dog, you have to expect that the premium for dog insurance will be slightly higher. Considering the high cost risk, you should still make use of this option. Dog health insurance can protect you from financial problems in an emergency and ensure adequate treatment for your four-legged friend.

Why premiums are rising for older dogs

As with all insurance, the risk is taken into account in the premium for dog health insurance. Since older dogs tend to get sick more often, they tend to incur higher treatment costs, which insurance has to cover. In this way, it is possible to offer fair rates to all policyholders, where younger dogs are insured more cheaply and older animals have to pay a little more.
