Horse insurance

Owning a horse is a responsibility spanning decades—and a financial risk that differs significantly from that of a dog or cat. Colic surgery can quickly cost several thousand euros, and unlike small animals, a horse can't simply be carried to the vet in an emergency. We compare insurance plans for you and show you which coverage is right for your horse.

What types of horse insurance are available?

There are essentially three components to horse care. Which ones you need depends on the horse's age, intended use, and your own risk tolerance:

  • Horse surgery insurance: It covers the costs of surgical procedures, including preliminary examinations, anesthesia, and aftercare. This is the most important component because this is where the largest individual costs arise—a colic surgery is the classic example.
  • Horse health insurance: In addition to surgery, it also covers outpatient treatments, medications, and diagnostics. More comprehensive and therefore more expensive.
  • Horse liability insurance: It covers damages your horse causes to third parties. Unlike dogs, horses are legally considered luxury animals—owner liability is particularly strict, which is why this protection is practically indispensable.

What you should pay attention to when comparing

  • Waiting time: After the contract is signed, there is usually a waiting period before payment is made. This is a crucial point in cases of colic risk.
  • Deductible: Lower your premium, but shift the risk to you. Calculate what you can afford to bear in a worst-case scenario.
  • Performance limits: Some policies cap reimbursements per year or per incident. A high limit is more important for horses than for small animals.
  • Age and usage: Leisure horses, competition horses, and breeding horses are evaluated differently. The maximum age for taking out a new license also varies considerably.
